Working on a very smooth panel

I like to work on a gesso panel that is as smooth as glass.  The inherent impasto qualities of oil paint give me all the texture I need.  A super smooth surface allows me to create some wonderful textures using paint mixed with medium.   A typical loose texture applied over the smooth panel can be seen in the upper left corner of this painting detail..

Like most of the images in this section, this horse is reproduced much larger here than the actual size of the original painting.  I've used a #4 Kolinsky sable brush to apply my paint in a linear way, my usual method.
