Knife and brush work on canvas

This year I discovered a wonderful brown, called Asphaltum made by Gamblin Paints.  I substitute it for burnt umber.  In this painting I've used asphaltum to establish all the darks.   I've applied the midtones and light colors with the biggest brushes possible.  I've used my painting knife to blend some areas and to scrape off paint down to the canvas in others.  The finest details are made using a #2 or a #4 filbert bristle brush turned on the edge.  I rest my hand on a mahlstick when I paint to help me achieve a light touch.
