Using a sable brush

As with many of the images in this section, this painting detail is shown much larger than actual size.  Rather than blend the thing to death, the forms are finished using a high quality pointed sable watercolor brush.   Most of the time I use a size 4.  Occasionally I use a size 1.  High quality oil paint is wonderful material that allows for very delicate handling.  The watercolor brushes wear out in a hurry though. To extend the life of a brush, I'll give it a treatment with hair conditioner after I wash it out with soap and water.
